Your chewing teeth at the back of the mouth are known as molars and as adults we usually have 3 molars per side (total of 12 molars). Out of these molars the ones at the end, are the infamous third molars or wisdom teeth.
These teeth are usually the ones that tend to cause issues in the mouth. They are difficult to clean as they are all the way in the back of the mouth making brushing and flossing hard. This makes these teeth prone to cavities and root canals. We do not advise root canals on wisdom teeth as the anatomy of the teeth is variable and access for the procedure is extremely difficult.
More commonly wisdom teeth tend to erupt in the mouth at different positions and angulations. This makes cheek biting a very common problem.
Sometimes these teeth do not erupt completely into the mouth and remain partially in the jaw bone. These tend to be the most problematic as the following issues can occur
This is easily verified by a full mouth x-ray also known as an OPG. This x-ray also allows us to identify if the wisdom teeth are at a correct angulation or would they lead to causing problems later on
At Reiyal’s dentistry, Kemps Corner, you’re tooth extraction will be done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. You will be in the best of hands so do not worry.
This depends on the position of the tooth in the jaw. If the tooth is completely buried in the bone, then you might experience some swelling. This swelling is easily managed by the correct medication and home care instructions which we will provide post -surgery.
WE do not recommend this procedure as it causes a lot of discomfort during the healing period. We do however, recommend removing both the lower and upper wisdom tooth of the SAME SIDE.
